The Bestiary comes from what your crew scans out in the field. Point the scanner at a creature and its full entry, danger rating included, files into the ship terminal. The Bestiary holds 30 monsters, every one of them out to kill you. Of the 30, 21 ship with the same looping clip the terminal plays when you pull up their file.

Sigurd assigned a percentage to 22 of the Bestiary’s 30 entries, and every one of them reads like a warning scrawled by someone who’s already lived through it, not a clean combat stat. The numbers don’t cluster high. They spread across a flat 0% up through 100%, sitting closer to a 50% median than 75%, before the Maneater ignores the scale entirely and lands at 1000%. The eight without a number stay that way for a reason: the Vain shroud’s slot just reads “THIS IS NT A CREATURE,” typo included, instead of a percentage. All eight go in as Unrated rather than a guessed 0%.

Unlocking the Bestiary

The Bestiary is the ship terminal’s running file on every creature your crew has met, and it starts empty. You only add an entry by scanning the creature with your scanner (right-click by default) while it’s in view, and every entry on this page is the same text and title line you’d get typing BESTIARY in-game. Two entries here, Lasso man and mask hornets, barely have any text because the creatures behind them don’t actually spawn in a normal run.

Vain Shrouds, also commonly referred to as Vains, are a type of rhizomatous fern of the family Polypodiaceae. In ideal conditions, Vain Shrouds' fronds can reach a height of 8 feet, though they average 6'11'', and are 30-50 centimeters wide. Their roots are unusually large, and they are somewhat SOMEWHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTprickly.

With their aggressive reproduction and remarkable size, they take up a lot of space, making visibility difficult, and are difficult to remove. They crowd out healthy plants and offer little nutritional value. They are also highly flammable. A strongly correlated mutualistic relationship has been observed between Vain Shrouds and the Kidnapper Fox, and for this reason Vains are a danger when they are allowed to expand to great numbers. Due to this and their other harmful effects on many ecosystems and agriculture, Vains have been classified as a noxious weed by the ITDA since 1963.

Their planet of origin is unknown, and they were first recorded by plant researcher Alex Kurt in CoRoT-7b in 1963 before being found on the other side of its same interplanetary system just weeks later. A common myth is that the Vains were first spread across planets due to their mild hallucinogenic properties when ingested, but their history is shrouded in mystery.
