20 keys, relics, tools, and quest items, none costing a notch to carry
Data from build 22529139, updated
Hollow Knight splits its inventory into two systems, and this is the one that isn't Charms: 20 items across keys, relics, tools, quest objects, and stackable materials, and none of it takes up a notch to carry. 7 are keys, single-purpose openers like the City Crest for City of Tears or the Tram Pass for Hallownest's trams. The 4 Relics, Wanderer's Journal, Hallownest Seal, King's Idol, and Arcane Egg, exist to be sold rather than used. Everything else splits across 3 maps and map tools, 2 usable tools, 2 quest items tied to specific NPC storylines, and 2 stackable materials like Pale Ore and Rancid Egg. What isn't here is where in Hallownest each one drops. Treat this as a reference for what an item does, not a map for finding it.
The four Relics, Wanderer's Journal, Hallownest Seal, King's Idol, and Arcane Egg, exist for one reason: dig them up and sell them to Lemm at Fountain Square in City of Tears, the only merchant in Hallownest who deals exclusively in relics. Unlike the Geo already in your pocket, relics survive a death, so they're the safest Geo you're carrying into a rough boss attempt.
7 keys each open one specific thing: City Crest gets you through City of Tears' Crest-shaped doors, King's Brand opens the sealed way down to the Abyss, Tram Pass lets you ride the trams, and so on down the list. None get used up. Once a key's done its job, it just rides along in your inventory for the rest of the run.
