15 starting Decks, one pick, no take-backs
Data from build 17459173, updated
15 Decks decide the terms of a run before you’ve drawn a card. Pick one and it locks in your hand size, discards, starting cash, and sometimes the deck’s card mix, for as long as that run lasts. The Red Deck throws in an extra discard each round, the Blue Deck an extra hand instead, and the Magic Deck opens with a Crystal Ball voucher and two copies of The Fool already in hand. New players usually default to Red because the extra discard feels safer, but Blue does more for a hand built to score big.
There’s no mid-run respec for your Deck choice, unlike almost everything else in Balatro. The Black Deck adds a sixth Joker slot but costs a hand every round to get it, and the Yellow Deck just gives $10 up front with no catch at all, which shows how unevenly the fifteen options are balanced against each other.
Most Decks are unlocked from the start, but some have to be earned: discover enough items for the Collection, win a run with a specific Deck, or clear a run on a particular Stake. Stakes are difficulty settings, not Decks, and that distinction trips people up constantly. Beat a high enough Stake and a new Deck unlocks as the reward, but the Deck itself never makes a run easier or harder.
